In what was an exemplary demonstration of transborder support, friendship and solidarity between authorities from different levels and different countries, the Galician President Alberto Núñez Feijóo expressed direct support on the occasion of the candidacy launch of the Portuguese city of Braga for European Capital of Culture in 2027, last night.
Mr Núñez Feijóo praised not only the city of Braga but also Porto, both of which are located in Northern Portugal and thus not far from Galicia. The two regions together form a larger Euroregion – a format that promotes closer cooperation in different fields and minimizes the importance of national borders.

The two regions have historically had a long history of strong cultural links and this tradition is being continued with the support shown by the President of the Galician Government (Xunta).
“If Braga manages to become European Capital of Culture, it would coincide with the Holy Year 2027, which would mean a happy coincidence for our Euroregion and its consolidation within the cultural field,” said Mr Núñez Feijóo. The Holy Year he mentioned refers to those years when the Feast of Saint James (Galicia’s patron-saint), 25 July, falls on a Sunday when it is believed that all pilgrims who completed the St. James’ Route will receive absolution for their sins.
Santiago de Compostela was itself the European Capital of Culture back in 2000, which served as a significant cultural and economic boost there – an altogether great experience, which the Galician leader would like for Braga to go through, as well.
Mr Núñez Feijóo also had warm words for Porto, the largest city in the Euroregion, of which he was made an honorary citizen, and which he called “the most cosmopolitan” there. Porto also had the honour of becoming European Capital of Culture in 2001, right after Santiago de Compostela.
