The municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has a campaign that will run until tomorrow, 15 December, encouraging citizens to boost their glass recycling and to promote an even greater awareness of the special containers where this material gets dropped off. The campaign carries the name ‘1 kg of glass for 1 kg of food’ indicating the commitment that the administration has taken to match each kilogram of recycled containers with a matching amount of nutrition for the food banks operating in the city.

Glass recycling is one of the simpler routes towards promoting a circular economy due to the practically infinite life of the material and its potential for reusability. Inculcating love for glass is an important aspect of the environmental policies of governments that want to turn the attention of generations practically raised on having to rely on plastic to more environmentally friendly and traditional materials.
“The objective of this campaign is not only to encourage and educate the population about the need to bet on recycling and care for the environment but to do it in terms of solidarity on these special days,” said Inmaculada Medina, the local Councillor for Public Services.
Four special large containers, carrying the image logo of the initiative, had been placed in various points around the Canarian city. There, citizens were encouraged to deliver the maximum amount of glass that they could scrounge up with the goal of thus donating the maximum amount of food for those in need.
Meanwhile, the official website of Las Palmas quoted some data, which shows that last year the residents of that city recycled nearly 5500 tons of glass containers. That means that, on average, every inhabitant contributed 14.5 kilograms.
