A one-of-a-kind attraction was inaugurated earlier last week in Croatia – namely Biokovo Natural Park’s Skywalk. Protruding 12 metres away from the cliffs of the park, the horseshoe-shaped edifice boasts a glass base for walking that offers a spectacular vista. It is located at a height of 1228 metres above sea level, some 13 kilometres up from the Biokovo road.
From the elevated position of the Skywalk, visitors are able to spot and marvel at the sights of Tučepi, Podgora and Makarska, the Dalmatian islands of Hvar, Brač, Vis and Korčula, as well as Pelješac. Should the weather allow it, one can also spot Italy’s Cape Monte in the distance.
Furthermore, visitors will find plenty of history and facts about the rock formations that can be found around the Skywalk. A special geological pillar has been erected, as part of the venue’s natural environment, that gives an overview of the type and age of many of the rocks surrounding it.
A point of great pride for Croatia
The importance and the uniqueness of the new venue can not be underestimated, judging by its opening ceremony. In attendance at opening day were members of the Croatian government, including Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, the Minister of Regional Development and European Union Funds Marko Pavic, as well as the Minister of Health Vili Beroš and other dignitaries.
During the opening ceremony, PM Plenkovic stated that this project presents a unique opportunity for the Biokovo Natural Park and is a large step forward in terms of its offer to tourists and visitors who are eager to find out more about Croatia and its beauty.
The Minister of Regional Development and European Union Funds, Marko Pavić, also emphasized the importance of the project, highlighting the country’s efforts in protecting the environment. “It is my pleasure to be with you today, just a day after Croatia handed over the presidency to Germany. In the European Union, we are known for tourism and natural beauty, and one of the symbols of investing European funds in Croatia will certainly become Skywalk Biokovo. Congratulations to JU PP Biokovo on the investment, in the next financial perspective, large funds will be provided, a significant part of which will relate to nature protection and climate change. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this project. “
