Paris will once again take centre stage in high-level debates on climate and biodiversity. This time, the French capital will host the “One Planet Summit”, organised by the Government of France, the United Nations and the World Bank. The one-day event on 11 January is a unique opportunity to declare strong ambitions for the protection of nature, in light of the coronavirus crisis. Registration of participants is still possible.
The Paris Agreement is not enough
The first One Planet Summit was held on 12 December 2017, two years after the adoption of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Already back then, the organising parties observed that the objectives of the Climate agreement would not be attained without stronger commitments, more concrete decisions and wider mobilization of all stakeholders from the public and economic sectors.
Today the same parties invite the world to a renewed conversation on the protection of nature and biodiversity, this time in light of the global coronavirus pandemic. The summit will bring together heads of states and governments, leaders of international organizations, financial institutions, the business sector and NGOs, which are expected this time to make commitments for concrete actions to preserve and restore biodiversity and to launch initiatives capable of achieving this.
The 2021 edition of will focus on four key topics:
- the protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems;
- the promotion of agro-ecology;
- the mobilization of funding for biodiversity and finally
- the link between deforestation, species and human health.
Since its establishment three years ago, the Summit has boasted three editions, 121 countries involved in the coalitions, 5 public-private partnerships, set up to mobilize more than 2 billion dollars of finance for the transition in developing countries and 308 concrete research projects conducted worldwide.
