Constructed in 1984, Parque del Mar is one of the first sights that visitors to the Balearic capital see. It borders the seacoast as well as the main attractions of the city, such as the medieval walls and the emblematic cathedral, commonly known as La Seu.
A fresher look also means better accessibility
On 1 July, city officials revealed a plan to use funds generated by the Sustainable Tourism Tax to the tune of EUR 955 414. The money is meant to go towards renovating 6000 square metres of the park area.
“We want to make Palma a more sustainable and accessible city and this project involves an aesthetic remodelling and, best of all, it will improve the safety of this space”, assured Angélica Pastor, the Councillor for Infrastructure and Accessibility. This is a multi-pronged approach which aims to modernize the look of this important part of the city, starting in the first quarter of 2021.
The plan, however, is still in the proposal stage because it first needs to gain the approval of the Commission of the Historical Centre of Palma de Mallorca. This body is stated to meet next week and following a successful outcome, it can be approved by the City Council (Junta de Gobierno).
The idea behind such debates and deliberations is a desire to preserve continuity with the historical surroundings without sacrificing sustainability in the quest for harmony. Some examples of the intended improvements are:
- Replacement of the original material, which has degraded over the past 35 years, with more resistant tiles matching the colour scheme of the surroundings.
- Replacement of the guard rails of the concrete footsteps.
- Renovation of park fixtures, such as benches, trash bins and water fountains, providing better accessibility.
- LED lighting will be installed so as to illuminate the Joan Miró mural and the wharf.
Councillor Pastor described the project as “very necessary” and worth prioritizing due to the deterioration in the park over the past years.
