Earlier this week the local parliament of Brno – a statutory city in the South Moravian Region of the Czechia, approved the execution of four projects related to accessibility. The barrier-free solutions to be implemented by the end of the year amount to over 1 million crowns (38 thousand euros) and add up to a total of 5,130,000 crowns which were made available in 2020 to increase the city’s accessibility, authorities reported.

A special board to take care of the accessibility of urban spaces
The decision of the City Council of Brno allows for the curb on Komenský square to be modified, barrier-free modifications of the crossings to be built on Křížová Street, and for the asphalt surface of the sidewalk in the section Mendel Square – Ypsilantiho to be repaired. All this, by the end of 2020. In addition, surface modifications are planned at the intersection in front of the railway station in Králové Pole, which will begin next year.
The upcoming accessibility initiatives in Brno are part of a larger joint project in which RMB Advisory Board for Barrier-Free Brno takes part. The Board aims to reduce barriers in the city and thus create an accessible environment.
Its activities are partially driven by the suggestions of citizens, users, city districts and other local actors that draw attention to specific obstacles in mobility that exist in the city. It also cooperates, for example, with Brno Roads or the Transport Company of the City of Brno.
In order to decide which barrier should be removed next, they study the feasibility of implementation, readiness, ownership, creation of comprehensive barrier-free routes, occupancy and other aspects. After this has been done for the four situations listed above, the advisory board recommended the implementation of 4 projects and they were approved by the councillors.
Finally, a media release by the municipality of Brno informs that a total of 5,130,000 crowns were made available for this year to increase the city’s accessibility.
