Earlier today, the official website of the Government of Castilla-La Mancha announced that it has approved the allocation of a grant to the value of 50 000 euros, which will go to reward the efforts made by several different non-governmental organizations towards raising awareness and designing initiatives for instituting wider acceptance of responsible consumption among the population.
This is the first time that the regional authorities in the south of Spain issue this kind of subsidy and it shows the overall changing attitudes at the highest levels towards the importance of issues, such as responsible consumption and fair trade for the implementation of a greener economy and lifestyle.
The regional Statute of Consumers has made space for the possibility to reward such good practices
It was reported that seven entities will share the grant as a form of praise for their work on the spread of the message of sustainable consumption. These are non-profit and educational organizations and their names are: ‘Romero Comercio Justo’, ‘Albacete Apadrina’, ‘El Rincón Lento’ and ‘DiDeSur (Dignity and Development for the South)’, ‘Red Alimenta’, ‘Emerge Toledo’, and ‘ El Sembrador School of Hospitality and Recovery’.
“We want to encourage initiatives, such as these seven, which serve as a model and example for others, due to the social and environmental value of the activities they develop within the responsible, inclusive, collaborative, sustainable and solidarity frameworks,” said José Luis Escudero, the regional Minister for Sustainable Development.
He added: “Each one in its different areas, contributes to the objectives for which we work from the regional government, such as contributing to reducing food waste in the family and institutional sphere. But also, to ethical buying, social innovation, the fight against depopulation through collaborative consumption initiatives and promotion of entrepreneurship, and the promotion of consumption of local, agro-ecological and seasonal products”.
Although there have been this kind of non-profits working on these just causes, their visibility and impact among the general population still remains fairly marginal, which is why it may be necessary for authorities to do more in shining the spotlight on their work.
