The Cypriot government has revealed its first-ever support plan for electric and hybrid vehicles which came into effect last week. The plan, developed jointly by the country’s Energy Ministry, the Fund for Renewable Energy Sources and the Energy Saving Fund has the goal of making it easier for citizens to transition away from polluting vehicles and onto more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives in a structured and supportive manner.
Embracing the future
The plan revealed by the government is the first of its kind in Cyprus and it will be in effect until 20 December 2021, providing financial support to different projects and purchases related to electric vehicles and their widespread adoption into everyday life.
Under the plan, project proposals of up to 1 million euros will be supported and they will see the expansion and creation of vast and more integrated networks of charging points and photovoltaic systems across Cyprus. The approach is key for Cyprus’s climate ambitions as it will not only make it easier and more convenient for citizens to transition towards electric vehicles, but it will also create ample infrastructure for their charging via renewable energy.
The plan itself is divided into three subcategories. Under Category A, applicants can request funding for expanding or installing photovoltaic systems or electricity meters for the charging of electric vehicles. Projects under this category are entitled to funding of up to 2,250 euros.
Category B covers the creation of new charging points or electricity meter with up to 1,250 euros, while Category C is meant for applicants whose properties already boast photovoltaic systems and charging points but would like to install a new metering system. The latter will be subsidized with up to 750 euros.
