Yesterday, 9 December, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), the largest research and innovation network on the continent, distributed its annual awards that seek to recognize forward-thinking talents in different areas. The international jury evaluated the 26 nominees, all of whom are working on inventions in products and services that contribute towards the greener and more digital economic transformation.

The mission of the EIT is to help make the European economy more competitive and its market and economic practices a reliable role model for the global community.
“It is clear that innovation will play a key role in Europe’s recovery. The many bright minds and their technologies on show today further demonstrate that the EIT’s unique approach to innovation is powering a new generation of entrepreneurs and services for Europe. My congratulations to all the finalists, and, in particular, the 2020 EIT Award winners!,’’ said Mariya Gabriel, the EU Commissioner for Innovation and Research, who was also present at the ceremony.
The competition was divided into four categories, whose winner would take 50 000 euros, each. Likewise, those placed second and third received 20 000 and 10 000 euros, respectively.
Here are the categories in question and their winners:
- EIT Change Award – Chaitanya Dhumasker, MonitorFish (Berlin, Germany). The award recognizes best graduates from the Institute’s training programmes.
- EIT Innovators Award – Andreu Martínez Climent, Corify Care (Madrid, Spain). This award shines the light on the developers of high-impact products and services.
- EIR Venture Award – Filippo Bosco, BluSense Diagnostics (Copenhagen, Denmark). This is for the start-ups and scale-ups that have managed to progress the most thanks to business support on part of the Institute.
- EIT Woman Award – Cristina Aleixendri Muñoz, bound4blue (Barcelona, Spain). Recognition for the female entrepreneurs and leaders in innovation on the continent.
The prestige of these distinctions is underlined by the fact that EIT is now a formidable presence on the European innovation scene, thanks to it being a network were the private sector, research organizations and universities get to meet, interact and create together. This means more than 2000 partners in over 60 innovation hubs across Europe.
