Juan Manuel Moreno, the President of the Andalucian Government, and Ana Mula, the Mayor of Fuengirola, inaugurated the renovated wholesale fish market located at the city’s port. This will allow for a more comfortable and modern processing for the catch brought in by fishermen, as well as for visits by tourists.
Raising visibility of the processing and wholesale of seafood products
The project of the enlargement and modernization of the fish market exactly 14 months after it was begun. In that time, the area of the working space was more than doubled, growing from 418 to more than 1 000 square metres.
This seeks to rejuvenate the port area of the city and make it the focus of economic growth by investing both in the traditional fishing, as well as in the tourism sector.
For the fishermen and the workers at the market, that means improved mobility and modernization of their work activities. This meant the addition of offices and widening the auction areas. Other additions were the installation of a freezer equipment, storage area and a centre for the processing of shellfish.
All of the above improvements ensure better traceability of the seafood products which guarantees the quality for the purchasers and consumers down the distribution line.
The frenzied hustle and bustle surrounding the auctioning of fresh fish is one of those activities which have a great potential to generate significant tourist interest. That is why the widening of the floor area allows not only for workers to have more space to operate but also for tourists to come and observe the process.
Making fish markets more accessible will also help raise awareness around the origin and handling of seafood among the general public.
Financing for this project, with a grand total of 887 000 euros, was provided by the Government of Andalusia and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.
