As Belgium gradually lifts its travel restrictions, Ghent is getting ready to give new life to its tourism sector in a sustainable manner. For this task, the Flemish city has set aside no less than 1,5 million euros and has engaged in a collaboration with a number of representatives from the travel and tourism, and supporting industries. The local authorities announced on Monday a new course towards achieving healthy and sustainable local tourism.
Post-covid tourism must focus on sustainability
Ghent is well aware that tourism after the Covid-19 pandemic will and should be different. That is why the local authority has prepared a a three-part recovery plan focused on allocating tourist activities in terms of time and place.
To start with, several communication campaigns will put Ghent’s unparalleled assets on the map with the focus on overnight tourism. Second, the City of Ghent, together with local entrepreneurs will develop a new range of coronavirus-proof tourist services tailored to the needs of specific target groups which have deliberately chosen Ghent. Finally, organisers of conferences and meetings in Ghent will receive support.
For the summer of 2020, Gent’s tourism offer will focus on the uniqueness of the destination and the Year of Van Eyck. Ghent will also present itself as the starting point for walking and cycling tours. Creative locals and influencers will contribute to the promotional campaign.
In July, Jan Van Eyck takes centre stage, while in August, tourism in Ghent will focus on families with children. In the long term, the tourist offering will be extended throughout the year and will take visitors off the beaten track whenever possible. In this way, cycling and walking routes will lead visitors to the suburbs, the periphery, the green belt and the less frequented spots of the city centre.
Finally, Ghent will facilitate the sustainable tourist product with vehicle electrification and the development of wheelchair-friendly activities and infrastructure. The city will also make efforts to ensure that those on a limited budget can pay a visit, too.
