The Austrian city of Graz has unveiled its plan for how it aims to keep people healthy and active over the course of the new year – namely the launch of the Graz Sports Year 2021 and its specially designated and designed website letsgograz.at.
Over the course of the next 12 months, local authorities will be organising countless events and will also be hosting a year-long initiative that will aim to convince locals to go outside and keep themselves healthy and active.
Promoting sports among citizens
Earlier last week Mayor Siegfried Nagl and City Councilor for Sports Kurt Hohensinner symbolically pressed the button that marked the launch of the new website and the kickstarting of a new sporting season. Around 180 events from almost 150 clubs have already been approved, and a few more will be added over the next few months. In total there are around 200 projects that will get things initially moving in 2021.
During the launch, Mayor Nagl explained that “We are enthusiastic about the variety of the program. From March 1st, sports will be the focus of this city. I call on all Graz residents to participate and be there. There is certainly something for everyone.
In the last few weeks, we have all noticed how much we miss sport – both active and also passive. We miss our football games with friends, the weekly tennis match, but also the visit to the football stadium or the sports halls. So, it is all the more our great goal to offer sporting opportunities at an unprecedented stage next year. “
One of the landmark ideas of the initiative that were also presented is the year-round “Schloßberg Challenge”. From March 1st until the end of the year, local authorities want to motivate as many people as possible to climb the Schloßberg on foot.
At Schloßbergplatz, you log into a system, then you walk up the steps (or over the sidewalk on the other side of the mountain) to the clock tower where you will receive your personal, digital photo of the challenge as a reward. At the end of the sports year, around 300,000 participants should have climbed Schloßberg – that is, every Graz citizen at least once.
