As more and more time passes and as the numbers of COVID-19 cases are very slowly stabilizing, the Greek government is getting ready to gradually begin lifting some rules and restrictions that were meant to keep the disease under control.
Learning from experience
The Greek government introduced a lockdown on 7 November which is set to expire at the end of the month. Instead of doubling down and extending it, however, authorities aim to lift some of the restrictions that will have the least impact on increasing the number of COVID-19 cases in the country.
The full plan of the Greek government is expected to be presented sometime next week but here are some of the main changes that can be expected to be gradually introduced after 7 December:
- Schools and kindergartens could reopen as the Greek government has not observed a severe link between their closure and the increase in COVID-19 cases
- Retail stores could also be slated for a reopening as their closure has not proven to have had a serious impact on the spread of the disease
- It is possible for restaurants and cafes to be allowed to resume operations at some point before Christmas but nightclubs and bars will most likely remain closed for an extended period of time.
And while these attempts to lift lockdown restrictions to help the economy recover while simultaneously trying to prevent the loss of life might appear feasible under the current circumstances, it is not out of the question for the situation to deteriorate even further. COVID-19 cases in Greece continue spiking at an alarming rate which might give pause to lawmakers eager to give the country’s economy some breathing room at the expense of the country’s healthcare system
