Yesterday evening, the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced a series of new measures to tackle the spread of COVID-19, joining a host of other European leaders in declaring new measures as countries battle a second wave. During his speech, Conte underlined that “we cannot waste time” as he announced the new restrictions.
The country saw more than 10 000 new daily cases on Friday for the first time, followed by 10 935 on Saturday and 11 705 on Sunday. Italy was the latest European country to announce new restrictions over the weekend.
New restrictions aimed at limiting the spread of the coronavirus
Restaurants will have to display their maximum capacity outside, and close by midnight. Bars have to close at 6 pm if they do not provide table service.
Private sector companies were encouraged to follow the public sector in increasing the number of employees working from home. Local festivals will be banned along with amateur sports. Gyms will remain open only if they adapt to anti-Covid security protocols in a week.
The mayors have the power to close squares and streets after 9 pm. Curfew until the same hour in the nightlife areas where gatherings occur, prohibition of long tables in restaurants and in-person conventions and large meetings.
As for higher education, flexible forms in the organization of teaching will be instituted: an increase in digital teaching, push to afternoon shifts and starts from 9 am. No local fairs will be organized, only national or international trade fairs.
The new measures are effective as of today, 19 October 2020.
