Manchester City Council has partnered up with the housing association One Manchester in order to deliver on its ambitions to provide 32,000 new homes in the city by 2025. The local government has pledged that 6,400 of the total will be affordable to the citizens of Manchester who are in dire need of housing.
The first step in these ambitions has been the establishment of the partnership with local housing associations. The City Council will be providing a strip of land, located at Blackrock Street in east Manchester which can accommodate somewhere between 22 and 25 three-bed social homes. The management of the location will be taken over by the local government’s partner – One Manchester, who are responsible for the nearby Grey Mare Lane regeneration project.
Cooperation as the way forward
The City Council hopes that involving One Manchester in its operations will provide a much-needed early boost of momentum to the scheme and will help it grow rapidly from there.
Funding has already been provided for the project of creating the affordable homes in the area and One Manchester hopes that work on the location can begin by spring 2020 after their planning application for local development has been approved.
Councillor Suzanne Richards, Manchester City Council’s executive member for housing and regeneration, said: “We need more affordable housing in Manchester and in order to build the numbers needed we must work in partnership with our social landlords. Using Council land to support development helps to enable high-quality affordable homes to meet this demand.”

Members of the city council are also looking forward to continuing their cooperation with businesses and associations, as they believe that only by working together can they deliver on the needs of citizens.
