Tomorrow morning, 21 July, the City Council of Merida will begin giving out free single-dose packets of sanitizer gel and face masks to the tourism and hospitality businesses in the city. The first wave of product dispensation in the Open Museum of Merida (MAM) will be to the 99 companies which have signed up at the “DeMérida” database.

Apart from the 1 000 000 doses of 8 ml hand gel packets, the City Council had also purchased 200 000 face masks. The masks, together with some of the hand gel, will be distributed to the Municipal Department of Social Services, the Tourism Consortium of Merida and the Festivals of Classical Theatre and Stone & Music.
The remaining 800 000 gel packets will be available to all the firms involved in the hospitality and tourism sectors, which have expressed interest in receiving a portion. The idea is that these establishments will be able to give one packet to each of their customers, free of charge.
However, the criteria which will be used to decide how to distribute the hand sanitizer will also depend on the size of the company. Small enterprises, with up to 3 employees, will get 1200 packets, and those with 8 or more workers will get 6000 packets.
The measure is targeted at providing both tourists and establishments with a peace of mind in those extraordinary times. This will also ensure better adherence to the compulsory sanitary measures in place.
The purchase of the hand sanitizer and the face masks, and shields was possible due to a municipal surplus in the 2019 balance sheets. 20% of that surplus, or 308 952 euros, were used to finance the grant.
