An educational program aims to provoke reflection on the rights and duties of children in Barcelona. For ten years now the Film Series on the Rights of the Child has been offering families cinema projections of a selection of films. They combine leisure and learning with the intention of stimulating dialogue and debate with and among children.
This year in November the Children's Rights Film Series returns with the slogan “Barcelona takes care of childhood” at the Cinemes Girona. The new release of Dumbo, directed by Tim Burton and released in late March this year, and the acclaimed stop-motion animated film My Life as a courgette, an adaptation of Gilles Paris's novel Autobiographie d'une Courgette are the latest addition to the list.
Apart from these sessions aimed at the family audience, the cycle incorporates for the first time a session for teenagers, with The Life of Grace, the film in which Brie Larson shone on the big screen playing a supervisor of a reception centre for teenagers in a situation of vulnerability.
How to attend the movies projections
Attending sessions is free with prior registration. Accordingly, for Dumbo the available projections are three – Sundays on November 10 and 24, at 11.00 a.m. The film is about children's rights to receive attention and protection in situations of discrimination and helplessness; to be treated with respect, consideration and solidarity, especially when they are in situation of vulnerability.
My Life as a Zucchini will be played on Sundays November 17 and December 1, at 11.00. It deals with the following children's rights: right of homeless children to be taken care of and offered an alternative family welcome by public authorities as well as the right of children who suffer violence or any type of abuse to receive specific care and to be included in reintegration programs.
Finally, The Life of Grace can be seen on Sunday, November 24, at 11.30. The children’s rights discussed in the film are the right to receive protection against all types of physical, psychological or sexual abuse or abuse by public institutions and the right of child victims of abuse to receive physical and psychological recovery and for their appropriate social inclusion processes to be guaranteed.
