A collaboration agreement, which seeks to improve the lives of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients in the Cantabrian capital of Santander, was signed today. The two signatories were the Mayor of the city Gema Igual and the President of the Cantabrian Association for Multiple Sclerosis (ACDEM) María Lina Fernández. This pact, accompanied with a 6 032-euro contribution, shows the continuing commitment on part of the Santander authorities to promote ways that can improve the lives of sufferers from the debilitating disease.
ACDEM has the mission to raise greater awareness about MS among the general population
The Santander City Council would like to promote a better quality of life, not only for MS patients but also for their relatives and caregivers, who are often also in the need of extra support, training and guidance. The agreement supports the creation of social programmes which would ensure better visibility and societal participation for MS patients.
Likewise, the institutional cooperation would work to find ways to promote a better adaptation of MS sufferers through employment programs and the provision of psycho-social guidance that would help the recently diagnosed and their families to adapt to the realities of living with this disease. This would include psychological counselling for patients and caregivers, as well as for the creation of leisure spaces for caregivers.
Santander authorities have been working together with ACDEM for the provision of individualized counselling sessions and the organization of post-evaluation follow-up and mutual support groups for relatives of people living with MS.
ACDEM is a non-profit organization which was founded in 1991 with the objective of raising greater awareness about MS among the general population as well as the provision of support programmes.
Multiple Sclerosis is an auto-immune disease which affects the central nervous system causing communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body.
