The Slovenian tourism industry has yet another reason to celebrate. Not only can it attract tourists with beautiful vistas and enticing offers, but now it can pitch the country’s sustainable practices as yet another selling point.
The Sustainable Top 100 Destination Awards recently announced the recipients of the prizes in several different categories – and Slovenia managed to take home several of them.
Earning recognition through sustainability
The Slovenian Tourist Board announced that the country has received recognition in two vital aspects. On the one hand, its overall approach to sustainability in the tourism industry was received extraordinarily well.
The country’s national programme for sustainable tourism development climbed to the top spot in the Best of Europe category, further reinforcing the belief already held by authorities that the promotion and the introduction of sustainable modes of tourism is the right path forward for the industry’s growth.
Slovenia’s sustainability scheme has been in constant development for the past six years and involves hundreds of stakeholders with the goal of promoting the use of sustainable practices in the tourism branch.
Meanwhile, Bled also earned an award for best practice for its efforts in reducing local waste. It placed third in the Earth Award category thanks to the strides locals and authorities have made in keeping one of Slovenia’s most well-recognized locations waste-free.
Stakeholders and citizens have been engaged in a waste-free project over the past six years, strictly adhering to the principles of sustainability – nothing goes to waste and everything that can be recycled is recycled.
The official awards ceremony will be held between 6 and 8 October in Turkey, while the announcement was made online, instead of at an official ceremony due to the Coronavirus outbreak in Germany.
