Owing to a higher incidence in COVID-19 contagions on the island of Tenerife, compared to the rest of the archipelago, the Government of the Canary Islands took a decision on 16 December to restrict non-essential movement to and from that island and continue imposing night curfew starting at midnight on Friday, 18 February until 1 January 2021.
When it comes to tourists, however, those can still visit the island provided they bring a negative test for coronavirus and book hotel accommodation in advance. Staying with friends and relatives on the island, however, will not be allowed.
The regional government tries to implement a tough balancing act between sanitary and economic measures
The curfew will be imposed between 10 pm and 6 am, except for Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve when it will begin at 12:30 am. Gatherings on the 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January cannot exceed 6 people (children up to age 6 are excluded from that number) from maximum of two households.
Tenerife residents can travel to other islands or the mainland for non-essential purposes, such as administrative, legal, medical, emergency tasks. Residents from other islands, however, will have to get tested upon arriving to their home island from Tenerife.
It is also strongly recommended not to travel between municipalities within Tenerife, and this recommendation might turn obligatory later on depending on the circumstances.
The interiors of bars and restaurants will close, except those operating in working places such as cafeterias. Those establishments, which have outdoor terraces can continue operating but only at a 50% capacity and only permitting up to 4 customers, from the same household, per table.
Shopping centres can continue operating at 33% capacity in terms of visitors, however, recreational and resting areas and children’s playgrounds in these will stay closed.
